The three main infantry regiments wore additional markings in the form of a white "hash" or "tic" mark in a designated position on their helmet.  The position of the mark was above, below, or beside the unit emblem.  The correct position would be determined by the battalion number using the diagram to the right as a guide.
 
Interestingly the 3/506th had their marks applied incorrectly and wore them in the same position as the 1/506th instead.
