A Tribute To The Men Who Cleared The Way

Airborne Related Books

The first list below are books related to the 101st Airborne that I have read and can therefore recommend firsthand.  Some of the books may be reference material for uniforms, equipment, units, etc., while others may be unit histories, battle details, or an individual soldiers story.  Some are better than others, but all have important details on the Airborne.  Mark Bando's books are a wealth of information on all of the 101st units of WWII and the action they saw, I highly recommend them.

The second list are books still related to the 101st Airborne, but that I have not read yet.  Nevertheless I wanted to mention them here as published reference material on the 101st Airborne.

If you would like to recommend any additional books to add to the list, please contact the webmaster at the email address listed at the bottom of the page.

Book Alert - A Must Read!!!

It's finally here!!!  The long awaited release of the book on the 3rd Battalion of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment by my friend Ian Gardner and his co-author Roger Day.  Osprey Publishing released the book in April of this year.

"Tonight We Die As Men" is a highly researched book on the 3rd Battalion of the 506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division.  It covers the unit from it's inception at Camp Toccoa, Georgia through it's actions in Normandy for the D-Day campaign.  The title of the book comes from the famous words of the battalion commander, LTC Robert Wolverton to his men before boarding their planes on the eve of the invasion.  His words in their entirety were later to be called "Wolverton's Prayer" and can be found on the "Airborne Prayers" page of this website.

I have read the original manuscript, I have spent a good deal of time with Ian discussing his research on the subject and have even toured the battlefields with Ian as my guide.  This book will be, in my opinion, one of the most highly researched and detail filled books ever written about any single unit of the 101st Airborne Division in WWII.
I highly recommend it to any 101st Airborne enthusiast.

There is also a companion DVD available seperately called "The Forgotten Battalion", click on the banner below to visit The Forgotten Battalion website.

Normandy Book Signing Event 2009

In June of 2009 the authors, Ian Gardner and Roger Day traveled to Normandy with a crew of volunteers and two veteran guests of honor for a book signing event.  This event was held at the Utah Beach Museum and the Deadman's Corner Museum in St. Come Du Mont in conjunction with the 65th D-Day Anniversary celebrations.  Click on the picture to the rignt to be taken to a page which includes many photos taken at this event.
